Our Vision for Deedah
We believe this film will have a positive impact by educating people about what Down syndrome is, what it means to have Down syndrome, and how to treat people with Down syndrome. People with Down syndrome have the same dreams and desires we all share: to be accepted, to be respected and to be given an equal chance to realize their full potential.
We hope to put Deedah in the hands of every new and expectant mother of a child with Down syndrome. It is our belief the film will give these new moms courage by demystifying the challenges of Down syndrome, and more importantly, to show them the great joy their child will bring. We would also like to make the film available to ob-gyn’s, perinatologists and genetic counselors. They are often the people who have to break the news that a baby has Down syndrome. We hope Deedah will make it easier for medical professionals to break that news and to provide reassurance to expectant parents that life with a child with Down syndrome is a journey to be embraced, not feared.
We would like pediatricians, nurses and medical students to be exposed to Deedah as well. They will hopefully come to appreciate the potential of each child with Down syndrome and treat these patients as an individuals.We wish to share Deedah with every elementary and middle school staff member and their students. Bullying is a significant problem in our schools today and we hope children will come away with empathy for students with special needs, and the realization that all of us—special needs or not—are more alike than different.
We would also like to share this film with parents through PTA, church and other community programs. The film could spark many meaningful discussions around the family dinner table.
Finally, we want to make this film available to the families and friends of children with Down syndrome. The film shows that all of us possess special gifts. It is our hope that children with Down syndrome will grow up in a society where they are accepted, included and encouraged to develop their special gifts and share them with the world!
